LITERACY WORKS

Workshops are provided for all parents whose children are reading below grade level to train them how to read and assist their children in the home and at school

REPORT CARD: LIFE-JAMAICA

"LITERACY WORKS" -PARENT WORKSHOPS

  • In the 2018-19 academic years: parents attended 6-8 workshops at all 11 schools to learn how to read to and with their child. 
  • In 2019-20 academic years: attendance increased by 50%.
  • In 2020-22 academic years: over 30% of parents participated in virtual workshops and WhatsApp calls during COVID because of limited availability of internet and devices as well as work life factors.





1-2-3 BOOKS IN THE HOME LENDING LIBRARY: READING AT HOME

  • In 2014: No books sent home.
  • In 2019-2020:  2-5 books sent home. 70% of students have books in the home at any one time and are reading during the week and on the weekend
  • In 2021-22: School closings prevented books from being sent home and access to online books was limited. In April 2022, schools with libraries restarted the 123 Books in the Home Lending Library Program.

HELP US HELP CHILDREN READ

LIFE's Family Navigators 

Family Navigators communicate with and organize parents to attend workshops and meetings and distribute books to students in 1 2 3 Books in the Home Lending Library program. Family Navigators also serve as a liaison between the parents and the teachers focusing on increasing parental involvement in their child's educational experiences 

  • In 2014: 1 Family Navigator
  • In 2019-20: 10 Family Navigators
  • In 2020-22: Added 4 additional Family Navigators for a total of 14

LIFE's 1 2 3 Books In The Home Lending Library Program ensures that every student will be reading a book in their home and participate in weekly exchange of library books.  

  • In 2014-15:  5 school libraries completed
  • In 2016-18:  6 new school libraries completed
  • In 2019-20:  5 new school libraries completed
  • In 2021-22:  8 new school libraries completed

We engage with organizations to provide opportunities for parents and families living in under-resourced communities help their children learn to read

We find a way to reach parents and families

Two organizations are working with LIFE  to implement a tutoring reading program for students reading below grade level and, in September 2022 have participated in 3 Pop Up parent workshops and book distribution to start 1 2 3 Books in the Home Lending Libraries
