LIFE IN JAMAICA

In partnership with parents, teachers, school administrators and the Jamaican Ministry of Education, Youth and Information (MOEYI), Region 5

  • Since 2014 , LIFE  established  literacy enhancing programs in 10 schools in rural Jamaica catering exclusively to underperforming students, all of whom were reading below grade level
  • After only 1 year in LIFE's  programs, 70-80 % of these underperforming students were reading at or above grade level
  • These improvements in reading have been sustained for a second consecutive year.
  • 50% of underperforming students at one school have graduated from LIFE's programs and have been mainstreamed back to their grade level.

LIFE IN USA

  • For  3 years, a LIFE  volunteer has worked with the attendance team  at 2 middle schools in East Harlem to decrease absenteism and tardiness. Attendance issues contribute to students not achieving literacy
  • In the  2017-18 academic year, LIFE partnered with a preK school in Brooklyn to help parents foster their young child's neurolinguistic skills and interest in being read to.  3 parent workshops were conducted including "Stop the Summer Slide"  in which 74% of parents participate
